Meet the Trainers

Becky Cox, M.A., teaches at Knoles Elementary in Flagstaff, where she has been on staff for 13 years. Currently teaching Primary Special Education and a member and former supervisor of Knoles' Intensive Response to Intervention (RtI) program, she has also taught a self-contained, cross-categorical, severe behavioral class, kindergarten and first grade. Dan Gapp, M.A., recently retired as the science department lead at Marana High School District where he taught for over 30 years. He received both his MAT in Biology and his BS in Education from Northern Arizona University. To enhance their understanding of science, Dan’s advanced biology students annually prepared and taught a science unit to elementary students throughout the district. Mary Graf taught elementary, ELL and bilingual education in the Osborn and Casa Grande Elementary School Districts. She brings experience teaching in three countries, most recently in South Africa as a Fulbright Scholar. Mary currently serves as an education consultant and writer who specializes in aligning curriculum with the Arizona Standards and designing science lessons for elementary students and homeschool families. Scott Greenhalgh, M.S., is currently the coordinator for the Tempe High School International Baccalaureate program, the science department chair, and the coordinator of gifted services. He received his BS in Zoology as well as an MS in Natural Science. With 26 years of teaching life sciences cources under his belt, Scott has been honored by TUHSD as an Outstanding Teacher and by the Tempe Rotary Club as an Outstanding Educator. Kim Gunn, M.A., a 30-year veteran in education, recently retired as an Instructional Specialist Group Leader for Mesa Public Schools, providing training and coaching to teachers in best practices. Her professional interest as an education consultant is to help others increase student achievement by learning to effectively use proven, research-based instructional strategies. Larry Johnson, M.A., is a 9th and 8th grade Social Studies Teacher at Brimhall Junior High and has taught Junior High School Social Studies for 28 years. He received his BA and MA from Arizona State Univeristy in Secondary and Elementary Education. Dawn Koberstein, M.A., is the Math Facilitator at Frye Elementary School in the Chandler Unified School District working with K-6 grade teachers. She received her MA in Curriculum and Instruction from Northern Arizona University. She also holds an ESL endorsement from the University of Phoenix, Administrative Certification from Northern Arizona University, and is a Nationally Board Certified Teacher. DaNeil Olson, M.Ed., is the teacher-librarian at Ironwood Elementary in the Marana Unified School District. She received her M.Ed. in Elementary Education from Northern Arizona University and has been recognized by Who's Who Among American Teachers for excellence in teaching. Raul Piña, M.E., has worked as a teacher and administrator in low income school districts in both Texas and Arizona for over 15 years. Raul, a school principal in the Cartwright School District, specializes in developing sustainable capacity on school leadership teams. Karen Schedler, M.A., is the Science Program Manager for the Center and has been working in the field of environmental education since leaving the classroom in 1976. She received her BS and MA in Human Ecology and Education from Michigan State University and later served as the Educational Services Liaison at The Phoenix Zoo and as the Environmental Education Program Manager for the Arizona Game and Fish Department. Julie Straughn, M.Ed., served the Mesa Unified School District for 32 years as a teacher, content specialist, instructional specialist, collegial coach and Title I school improvement specialist. She has both elementary and secondary experience. Julie is well-versed in research-based instructional practices and collegial coaching. Her study of instructional improvement and collegial coaching practices has heightened her awareness of the need for increased collaborative efforts and deliberate classroom instructional and assessment practices. Mike Trimble, M.Ed., has been teaching at Corona del Sol High school for over 30 years and also works as adjunct faculty for Maricopa Community Colleges. He completed his M.Ed. in Biology Education at Arizona State University. Mike is a Presidential Awardee for Excellence in Science Teaching and was a gubernatorial appointee to the Environmental Education Advisory Council. He is the recipient of numerous honors including Arizona Science Teacher of the Year (ASTA), Teacher of the Year Award (Az-Nevada Academy of Science), Search for Excellence in Biology - National Exemplar (NSTA). Patty Vogel, Ed.D., served Tempe Union High School District as an administrator and teacher before retiring. She taught at both Arizona State University and Ottawa University, and is currently on the Arizona Department of Education's Support Cadre and Solutions Teams.
