STEM Summer Academies
SRP, in collaboration with the Center for Teacher Success, is pleased to offer two STEM Summer Opportunities: Global Climate Change in the Southwest Academy and Teaching Inquiry-based Science Institute. Strong emphasis is placed on life, physical and environmental sciences as well as math, technology and engineering using the framework of "Understanding by Design." Classroom-based assessment is stressed as an integral way to measure student understanding.
SRP is committed to STEM-focused professional development. Their generous sponsorship allows teachers to receive a stipend for their participation. Note: unlike other Center workshops, registration and location are arranged differently for STEM Summer Academies.
- Global Climate Change in the Southwest Academy
Educators enhance their understanding of climate change by participating in study tours, experiential learning and research tailored by grade level. Participants investigate the role of renewable energy for Arizona's future by analyzing solar, wind and hydropower capabilities. Strong emphasis is placed on physical and environmental science, math, technology, engineering, scientific integrity, economics, sustainability and metacognitive strategies. Learn more.
- Teaching Inquiry-based Science Institute
The Teaching Inquiry-based Science Institute helps teachers prepare and inspire their students to pursue STEM careers and enhance their content knowledge of science in the areas of energy, water and environmental stewardship. Participants are coached to understand the process of scientific inquiry by creating questions, based on real-world issues, and by following the steps for examining such questions. This institute allows teachers to more actively engage their learners in constructing meaning, which makes science relevant to the individual. Learn more.
