STEM Summer Academies
2012 Global Climate Change in the Southwest Academy
Presented by SRP and the Center for Teacher Success
Open to Teams of Educators within SRP Service and Impact Areas
What is global climate change? What are the environmental, economic and social implications of climate change in the Southwest? How can I inspire my students to become responsible environmental stewards? Participate in the academy designed for your grade level to gain valuable insights and enhance your own classroom practices focused upon one of the most significant challenges facing the world today.
Content Focus
Renewable energy and climate change with STEM emphasis on Life and Physical
and Environmental Science, Math, Technology,
and Engineering, scientific integrity, economics, sustainability and
metacognitive strategies.
Outcomes and Indicators
- Enhance your own understanding of climate change by participating in
study tours, experiential learning, and research especially designed with
your grade level in mind.
- Investigate the role of renewable energy for Arizona’s future by
analyzing solar, wind, and hydropower capabilities.
- Examine current data/information about climate change and debate what it
means for Arizona by participating in collaborative activities.
- Transfer your new learning to your classroom/workplace by developing an
instructional plan aligned to your curriculum and standards.
- Maximize quality team planning time by collaborating with colleagues from
your school and others.
Who Should Attend?
These academies are open only to teams of educators in grades 3-6 and 7-12 from the same school. Eligible schools include those within SRP service regions: Maricopa, Pinal, Yavapai, and Gila Counties as well as the towns of St. Johns and Page. If your school is eligible but did not receive a special flyer or email announcing those academies, please contact our office at (602) 716-2050.
All participants will receive a stipend of $100 a day upon satisfactory completion of the institute.
